University honours city entrepreneur

A Wolverhampton entrepreneur has been recognised for his contribution to the city’s business community with the award of an Honorary Degree by the University of Wolverhampton.

Henry Carver is best known for his work with the family business, Carvers Building Supplies. He has been managing director for nearly 30 years, overseeing a development from sales of £2m a year to today’s £32m.

The business was nearly destroyed in 2012 when a major fire gutted the firm’s home of 115 years. However, it rebuilt and has continued to thrive.

Mr Carver also oversees two other manufacturing companies based in Telford; Engineered Timber Solutions (ETS) and Timber Kit Solutions (TKS). The two businesses have a combined turnover of £7m as well as a company in Latvia.

He also supports the Wolverhampton Marathon and is also a patron of ‘The Way Youth Zone’ – a purpose-built facility in Wolverhampton for young people. He is a Rotarian, sits on the City of Wolverhampton Council’s economic board, is a member of Business Champions and President of Wolverhampton Business Forum.

He said: “I studied at the Wolverhampton Polytechnic, now the University of Wolverhampton, graduating in 1983. Without the knowledge and insight my course gave me into how a business works, I wouldn’t be where I am today. As a Wulfrunian and a graduate of the University, I am humbled and privileged to have been awarded an Honorary Degree.”

The University of Wolverhampton awards Honorary Degrees to people who have made a significant contribution to their field of expertise.
