Midlands Engine sets out vision to close productivity gap

Sir John Peace

The Midlands Engine has identified its Vision for Growth in a report that sets out how it intends to meet its 2030 ambitions.

It is focused on closing the productivity gap, with Midlands Engine chairman Sir John Peace highlighting that if the Midlands performed in line with the UK average, the £207bn regional economy would grow by £54bn.

“Today marks a key moment for the Midlands,” said Sir John. “By improving our productivity and driving economic growth we can power the country’s post-Brexit economy, not just for the benefit of Midlands but for the whole UK.”

The Midlands Engine Partnership has identified five priorities – connecting the Midlands, investing in strategic infrastructure, growing international trade and investment, increase innovation and enterpries, and shaping great places – that it believes are the key to closing the productivity gap.

Communities Secretary and Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid added: “The Midlands is essential to our national economic success and we have an ambitious vision for the region.

“Engagement with local partners will be crucial to its success and the Midlands Engine Partnership is putting local leaders, businesses and residents in the driving seat.”
