Birmingham manufacturer set for expansion after landing Apollo

Salts reveals expansion plans

One of Birmingham’s oldest family businesses has revealed plans for a major expansion, underpinned by a move to new premises.

Salts Healthcare is relocating to a new base at the Advanced Manufacturing Hub on the outskirts of the city centre.

The company has agreed terms to move into 94,500 sq ft Apollo unit speculatively-built by Trebor Developments, in conjunction with funding partner Aviva Investors Pensions.

Salts Healthcare is believed to be one of the oldest manufacturers in the country, with the family business tracing its origins to 1701.

Salts is split into three divisions: Salts Stoma Care, which designs and manufactures stoma care devices and additional products; Salts Medilink, a national network of 19 Customer Care Centres that supply and dispense stoma care and continence products; and Salts Techstep, an established leader in the manufacture of custom-made orthoses.

As part of the expansion it will be relocating its high tech and innovative manufacturing and assembly operations to supplement its other operations in the Birmingham area.

Philip Salt, chief executive of Salts Healthcare, said: “Moving to this large prestigious site enables Salts to continue its exciting expansion programme. Its modern manufacturing plant fits perfectly into the Advanced Manufacturing Hub.

“Apollo’s size, position and proximity to Salts head office make it a perfect fit. Salts is pleased that Birmingham, with its central location and powerful infrastructure, remains the ideal place for its manufacturing base.”

Peter Salt, managing director of Salts Healthcare, added: “The Apollo building will allow Salts Healthcare to continue with its business expansion and provide it with the opportunity to further develop its innovative production techniques and product research.

“We are proud to have secured this new prestigious site which will allow us to remain in Birmingham and it fits well with our future plans and strategies.”

Trebor said the letting followed strong interest in the building from a number of other potential occupiers and the deal had been achieved within six months of the building’s completion.

Bob Tattrie, managing partner, Trebor Developments, said the company had been confident that strong demand for units of this size had warranted the speculative project.

“We always strongly believed in the location of the site and having delivered a quality, industrial, premises, were pleased with the high levels of interest from a range of occupiers,” he said.

“Salts Healthcare met all the criteria we had hoped for in letting this building and we will have seen the site acquired, developed, let and occupied in less than two years.”

Trebor Developments/Aviva were represented by joint agents, Savills Birmingham (Charlie Spicer) and Cushman & Wakefield Birmingham office (David Binks).

Salts Healthcare was represented by Aspinall Verdi, Leeds office (Atam Verdi) and Gateley, Birmingham office (James White).
