A 290-bedroom student block is being proposed for the site of the former Nautical Club in Birmingham city centre.

Plans for a 15-storey student accommodation block on Bishopsgate Street have been submitted to Birmingham City Council by architects Corstorphine + Wright.

“The proposal to create the Nautical Club development is a good opportunity to change what is currently a disused restaurant and bar, which was formally the Birmingham Nautical Club into an active and vibrant area,” the planning documents said.

The scheme, called Bishopsgate, is close to the proposed Arden Gate and 111 Bishopsgate Street schemes.

It is on the corner of Bishopsgate Street and Communication Row, in the Westside area of the city centre, and would be developed next to The Pavilion student development.

The Bishopsgate scheme proposes a mixture of studios and mixed cluster apartments, plus shared student spaces, cycle parking and a private communal garden.

The ground floor of the building would contain the foyer and reception, together with communal student spaces that allows for areas such as a lounge, study room, cinema and gym.
