Ambitions for new garden town revealed

Stafford Borough Council chief executive Tim Clegg reveals plans for a garden settlement

Stafford has unveiled its ambitions to build a new garden settlement to maximise the investment potential from the arrival of HS2 in the town.

The proposed 100-hectare site is 10 miles north of Stafford town centre, near Stone at Coldmeece and Millmeece.

A bid has gone in to Government for funding support and is part of the local authority’s plans to make the most of development opportunities that it expects to come from the arrival of HS2.

Stafford will be the only HS2 station between Crewe and Birmingham with the station located next to the town centre.

Earlier this year a £500m vision was revealed for the Stafford Gateway site, which includes the HS2 station. The 28-hectare site would create a new central business district and include office, hotel, retail and leisure developments.

The plans include a potential new junction on the M6, between junctions 14 and 15, and a new station on the West Coast main line.

“Stafford borough is ambitious,” added Clegg. “We have a track record of delivery, we have brought in significant investment.

“We have a wide range if development opportunities. We believe they are exciting and we want to make them happen.”
