On the job learning with degree apprenticeships

Degree Apprenticeships are a new education route bringing together higher education study and the invaluable on-the-job training typical of an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships are not just for school leavers; anyone of any age can complete an apprenticeship, providing opportunities to upskill your existing workforce as well as stimulate growth through recruiting new employees.

Working with subject specialists at the University of Birmingham, you can co-design a programme of learning and training that will teach apprentices the practical skills, academic knowledge and workplace behaviours that your company sees as necessary to perform specific job roles within your organisation.

Degree apprenticeships benefit employers in a variety of ways by allowing them to:
• Upskill existing employees to fill high-level skills gaps
• Have a flexible learning programme that is tailored to your specific business needs
• Recruit high-calibre future leaders who are likely to want to remain with the organisation after graduating
• Spread new academic, vocational and technological knowledge throughout the workforce
• Develop existing staff by encouraging them to mentor the apprentice
• Expand workforce diversity by providing new opportunities and routes into education and employment for talented young people.

We’re already have impact through the University’s first degree apprenticeship, which is a collaboration between the School of Computer Science and PwC. The four-year BSc Digital and Technology Solutions programme starts in 2018 and will initially see 40 apprentices a year combining university life with practical work-based technology projects at PwC, Birmingham.

For over a century, the University of Birmingham has been educating students, and has a wealth of experience in partnering with industry to find solutions to real world issues and to deliver bespoke, innovative education and training. We’re currently working with a range of other businesses to develop degree apprenticeships programmes in sectors such as finance, health, engineering and local government.
