Planners approve £15m redevelopment of luxury car dealership

Plans for the £15m redevelopment of a luxury car showroom in Birmingham have been approved.

Lei Shing Hong Group, owner of LSH Auto Properties, has been granted permission to demolish the existing Mercedes Benz dealership in Bromford Lane, Erdington and replace it with a new, much-improved facility.

The new facility will comprise a car showroom, repair workshop, MOT testing centre, vehicle storage/display area, a valeting area and associated infrastructure and landscape works.

The investment will safeguard the jobs of the 40 employees and create an additional 24 full-time roles.

Lei Shing Hong Group, established over 45 years ago, is now the world’s largest Mercedes Benz retailer, with more than 140 dealerships across China, Australia, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam and Cambodia. It has bolstered this position with expansion into Europe, including Germany and the UK.

The Hong Kong-based group took possession of the Erdington facility last year when it invested a significant sum in the acquisition of a portfolio of nine Mercedes Benz dealerships in the Midlands and North West.

Birmingham City Council’s planning committee was told that the proposal would involve the re-use of the existing site and would provide a modern purpose-built car dealership that would improve the character and appearance of the site and surrounding area.

Cllr Bob Beauchamp said: “This site has always looked half-finished so it’s a welcome addition to the area.”
