Michelin-starred chef set to light up business district

Glynn Purnell

Birmingham chef and TV show host Glynn Purnell has been chosen to flick the switch on this year’s Christmas lights display at the Colmore Business District.

The owner of Michelin-starred Purnell’s and sister restaurant Purnell’s Bistro will be performing the official duties at a special event in Colmore Square on Thursday (November 16) between 5.45pm-7pm.

The proud Brummie has recently appeared on national TV hosting Saturday Kitchen and as a judge on Channel 4’s My Kitchen Rules. He is also set to feature on this year’s Children in Need.

The event will see the the BID welcome the seasonal festivities in style with mulled wine, mince pies and a sing-along with Colmore Chorus – the district’s very own choir – plus a roller-skating Christmas pudding.

The evening has been arranged by Colmore Business District BID, which pays for the real Christmas trees in Colmore Square and Church Street Square, plus Christmas lights in Livery Street, Newhall Street, Barwick Street, Edmund Street, Margaret Street, Cornwall Street and Steelhouse Lane.

New decorations for this year include 12 lamp column lights in Colmore Square and three in Snow Hill Square.

Colmore BID chair, Gary Cardin, said: “We’re delighted once again to be providing the lights in the business district and to be able to contribute to the festive feel in the city.”
