TV revenues help to increase profits at Premier League club

Premier League club Stoke City has increased its profits despite the cost of player trading having a much bigger impact.

Stoke City finished 13th in the Premier League, winning 11 of its 38 matches, and went out early in both the FA and EFL Cups.

The club recorded profits of £4.9m for the year to May 2017, up by £2.9m. This was achieved despite the cost of amortisation of the squad value increasing by £5.9m and a £13.6m decline in profits from buying and selling players.

Turnover jumped by 30% to £136.0m, with almost all of the increase from the Premier League’s improved TV deal.

The club’s wage bill edged up slightly, to £84.9m, resulting in the staff costs to turnover ratio reducing by 17 percentage points to 62%.

This season is its 10th consecutive year in the Premier League, and it has always finished between 9th and 14th in the table. The club currently lies 14th, although has only won three matches and last month lost 7-2 at Manchester City.
