Work starts on £5.5m boarding school project

How the new Rugby School boarding house will look

Construction work has started on a new £5.5m boarding house development at an independent school in Warwickshire.

Rugby School is one of the oldest independent schools in the country and the new project is part of an eight-phase refurbishment of the school’s existing boarding facilities.

The 2,465 sqm development will provide bedrooms for 60 pupils, large communal rooms and a main dining room on the ground floor that caters for both students and staff.

Suitably placed accommodation for the key staff in bookend locations will ensure lower age groups are located close to staff for help and support if required.

The facilities have also been designed to include a secluded rooftop terrace and a double-height atrium, within the heart of the building, providing flexible spaces for socialising and study.

GSSArchitecture has been appointed as Architects, Principal Designers and Quantity Surveyors by Rugby School, alongside contractor Stepnell.

GSSArchitecture partner, David Allsop, said: “The new boarding house will be the first purpose-built boarding house at Rugby School since 1938 and an emphasis has been placed on creating high quality spaces using robust, long lasting materials to encapsulate the changing needs in society.

“This will offer one of the first fully single room en-suite facilities for all ages assisting students’ private study as well as preparing them for university life.”

Judith Robinson, director of estates at Rugby School said: “GSS has designed a stunning building that is fitting for Rugby School’s first purpose-built building in over 70 years.”

The sustainable boarding house building will incorporate advanced off-site manufactured bathroom pods to provide en-suite facilities that reduce construction time and ensure premium quality. In addition, carbon-saving green technology, including energy – efficient boilers and solar photovoltaic panels will be put in place.

The move away from shared facilities to prepare the students for university life will be setting a very high standard of accommodation for others to follow.
