Construction group agrees deal for 31-storey tower

The first tower under construction at The Bank development in Broad Street, Birmingham

Wates Construction has secured a £31.6m deal to build the second tower at The Bank development, weeks after the topping out ceremony for the first tower took place.

The 31-storey building, which will be nine stories higher than its neighbour, will be one of the tallest buildings in the city centre.

The development is on the junction of Broad Street and Sheepcote Street in Birmingham city centre, close to Brindley Place.

The first tower is due to open in July next year, with the second tower scheduled to be completed in autumn 2019.

John Carlin, business unit director, Wates Construction Midlands, said: “Collaborating with Regal on The Bank and creating a striking new addition to Birmingham’s skyline has been a fantastic experience for our Birmingham team. We are therefore honoured that our relationship is continuing with the second building at The Bank.”

The 170,000 sq ft tower has been designed by Glancy Nicholls Architects and will include ground floor retail space.

It was granted planning permission in March for the 205-apartment scheme.

Carlin added: “When complete, the two buildings of The Bank will be a benchmark for urban residential schemes in Birmingham.

“This is an incredibly exciting time for the city, with HSBC’s relocation of its UK headquarters to 1 Centenary Square, HS2 set to revolutionise the region’s transport offering and it being selected as the preferred British bidder for the Commonwealth Games in 2022.”
