Supermarket group reveals plans for new Birmingham store

Discount supermarket group Lidl has submitted plans to build a new store in Birmingham.

The company is planning to construct the 2,200sqm store on the site of the former Western Power depot in Warstock Road, Kings Heath.

The site functioned as a distribution centre, stock yard/storage for Western Power Distribution, together with accompanying offices.

However, the facility is now surplus to requirements after the power company moved to a new larger site to the north of Birmingham.

The plans would see the existing buildings demolished and the site cleared.

The proposed foodstore (below) will extend to 2,206sqm Gross External Area (GEA) with a 1,325sqm sales area, of which 80% (1,060sqm) will be for convenience goods and 20% (265sqm) for comparison goods.

In addition to the sales area, a warehouse extending to 547sqm and ancillary floorspace comprising staff welfare facilities, customer toilet, utility space, freezer and bakery will be provided.

The proposed foodstore will be served by 120 car parking spaces, including six disabled and eight parent and child spaces, which will be located close to the store entrance.

A planning and retail statement prepared by Rapleys on behalf of applicant Godwin Developments said the proposal had already found support from the local community following a public consultation.

“It is clear from the consultation that the proposal has received positive response from the local community,” said the statement.

“Although the principle of the site’s redevelopment was accepted by the local community, some members of the public raised minor concerns about the proposal’s impact on the highways network and access to and out of site.”

The development has been the subject of pre-application discussions with Birmingham City Council in anticipation of the planning application being submitted.
