A residential developer has secured planning for a new housing scheme on the site of a former haulage business in Walsall.

Silverlane Developments, advised by planning consultants Indigo, has received the go ahead from Walsall Council for its Sunnyside Farm residential development in Northgate, Aldridge.

Sunnyside Farm, which lies within the West Midlands Green Belt and includes part of the Kings Hayes Fields Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC), will deliver 62 homes, along with new open space which will relocate part of the SINC.

The 1.68ha brownfield site currently comprises a haulage yard, open storage, workshops, two residential properties and a paddock.

The redevelopment will provide a mix of one to four bed properties comprising detached, semi-detached and terrace housing in addition to an apartment block. The scheme was designed by Sutton and Wilkinson Architects.

Gary Illsley, development director of Silverlane Developments, said: “The site has been quite an eyesore for a number of years, and this was recognised by the council. We are delighted that the planning committee unanimously supported this sensitively designed scheme which will bring much needed family homes to the area.”

Nick Fillingham, Regional Director at Indigo, added: “Through our submission we demonstrated the very special circumstances required to redevelop this contaminated site in the green belt. This positive decision reflects the hard work of the team which now paves the way for development to commence.”

Construction is due to start later this year.

Other consultant team members included; Brian Evans (landscape design), REC (ecology and noise), Grasscroft (viability), Prospect Archaeology (archaeology), WML Consulting (flood risk, drainage and geo-environmental) and Croft Transport (highways).
