Construction group buys Carillion’s power business

Engineering and construction group, J Murphy & Sons has acquired Carillion’s former power framework business in an undisclosed deal.

The agreement means Murphy takes over Carillion’s position on National Grid’s electricity overhead lines, substation and underground cable framework contracts.

Former Carillion employees will transfer across to the group.

Murphy, which has bases in Cannock, Ollerton, Warrington and Leeds, said the frameworks provided it with the opportunity to work with National Grid to deliver planned replacement and refurbishment schemes on its 33kV to 400kV transmission network spanning England and Wales.

Murphy also becomes the new joint venture partner of Eltel working on the overhead line and T Pylon framework.

John Murphy, CEO at Murphy, said: “This represents an excellent strategic fit for the business, allowing us to bring a full range of services across the power sector for our customers both in the UK and internationally.”

David Brewer, Group Strategy Director, added: “We believe that private ownership creates a natural alignment of the interests of our customers, owners, employees and suppliers. We all benefit from a sustainable business, managed for the long term.

“Our success is founded on strong values and investing to develop deep engineering and direct delivery capability. This is an environment where the power business we have acquired today can thrive.”

The three frameworks will deliver essential national infrastructure which includes the 20km, 400Kv overhead line from Richborough to Canterbury that will connect the Nemo Link interconnector from Belgium with the UK transmission network.

Murphy said the addition of the former Carillion employees would broaden its own range of infrastructure services.

This expertise now includes designing and installing overhead power lines, substations and major underground systems, complimenting existing capabilities in civil engineering and tunneling.

“We have a strong sense of purpose, committed to improving lives by delivering world class infrastructure. I’m pleased to be able to work with our new partners Eltel to continue supporting National Grid and deliver essential energy infrastructure,” added Mr Murphy.

Founded in 1951, Murphy operates in the UK, Ireland and Canada, providing a range of construction services to infrastructure sectors including rail, water, power and natural resources.

Headquartered in London, related businesses include: Construction, Development & Property Services; PTS; Ground Engineering; Utility Connections; Murphy Plant, and Urban Realm.

Murphy directly employs more than 3,000 engineers, professionals and skilled operatives globally, specialising in delivering pipelines, process engineering, design, marine, tunnelling, fabrication, bridges and piling. It also invests heavily in its plant equipment and facilities.
