Thousands apply to be Legoland Master Builder

More than 5,000 people have applied for one of Birmingham’s most in-demand new jobs – that of Master Model Builder at the new Legoland Discovery Centre.

The new facility, which is housed within redundant space at Arena Birmingham, is set to open later this year.

To publicise the new facility, Legoland bosses launched a campaign to find a resident Master Model Builder and the campaign saw thousands of people apply for the vacancy, which has only been open for three weeks.

Entries have come from as far away as New Zealand, Australia and California with applicants including members of the Royal household and successful barristers.

Entries close on Friday (March 16) and the 50 shortlisted candidates will undergo a televised build-off as part of their final interviews.

The ‘Brickfactor Challenge’, which takes place on Saturday March 24, has been dubbed as the Hunger Games of Lego fans. Thousands of Lego bricks will be made available for the final event, which aims to whittle the contestants down to just one Master Builder.

The role is one of just 22 such positions across the world and will be located in a custom-built studio next to the attraction’s Creative Workshop and will boast an endless supply of Lego bricks.

In addition to building new attractions, the winner will be expected to curate exhibitions and mentor children and families to help them with their own model masterpieces.

Amy Langham, general manager at Legoland Discovery Centre, said: “The Master Model Builder role is such a privileged position to hold and the number of applications that we have received has come as no surprise. Given this role hankers creativity and excitement, giving someone the opportunity to win the job from a series of live challenges couldn’t be more fitting.”

The new Discovery Centre will feature more than two million of the plastic bricks, with iconic buildings and landmarks being built from scratch. There will be Lego-themed areas, an interactive laser ride and a 4D cinema.
