Contractor chosen for Walsall leisure scheme

Cordwell Leisure's Wisemore Central scheme in Walsall, with Travelodge and McDonald's
How Wisemore Central will look

Construction contractor Stepnell will build an £8m leisure development in Walsall town centre after being appointed by developer Cordwell Property Group.

The scheme, Wisemore Central, will include a 60-bedroom Travelodge hotel, McDonalds, and a further 15,000 sq ft of leisure and retail space.

The derelict land on which the hotel and restaurant will be located, is next to what will eventually become the site of the new £400m Gigaport scheme, which has the potential to create thousands of new jobs for the town.

The Wisemore area has undergone major redevelopment in recent years with an 85,000 sq ft Tesco Extra supermarket and the new Walsall College and business hub acting as major catalysts for regeneration.

John Rawlinson, regional director for Rugby-based Stepnell, says: “This important scheme will make a significant contribution to further regeneration in Walsall, and also enables Stepnell to provide community benefits including local job, training and apprenticeship opportunities and work for local suppliers.”

Explore Learning, GDK and Costa have already committed to the scheme, which will create up to 120 full and part-time jobs when it opens.

Work is due to start on site next month and be completed by the end of the year.
