Energy saving manufacturer bought by Staffordshire group

A supplier of lighting and security products hopes the acquisition of one of the UK’s leading energy saving manufacturers will create some efficiencies of its own.

Scolmore Group, a £60m-turnover business based in Tamworth, has bought Glasgow-based Sangamo for an undisclosed sum.

Gary Mordue, managing director of Scolmore Group, said: “Its location in Glasgow gives us the perfect manufacturing base and regional office to service our customers all over Scotland and the north.”

He added: “The company will continue to trade as an independent entity in all of its major functions and will seek to create strong growth over the coming years by utilising the experience and support of Scolmore.”

The deal sees Birmingham advisers Orbis exit Sangamo after 16 years’ involvement. The Birmingham-based corporate finance firm worked alongside investors and management when Sangamo was bought from Actaris in 2002.

Chris Gregory, a partner at Orbis, who has been a board member at Sangamo throughout the partnership, said: “Orbis has been heavily involved in the strategic development of Sangamo in recent years, culminating in the successful sale to Scolmore Group, which will provide a sound base for the future development of the Sangamo brand and business.”

Scolmore Group, which employs around 150 staff, generated pre-tax profits of £6.1m in its last financial year, to April 2017.
