West Brom’s off-field restructure gathers pace with fifth sacking

West Bromwich Albion have continued to overhaul its backroom team as its off-field restructuring gathers pace.

The club is almost certain to end its eight-year stay in the Premier League this month after a disastrous season. Albion are currently bottom, 10 points from safety with just 15 points still available.

Technical director Nick Hammond became the fifth sacking in recent weeks, following the departures of chairman John Williams, chief executive Martin Goodman, manager Alan Pardew and assistant head coach John Carver.

Mark Jenkins, who returned as chief executive in February, said “no stone will be left unturned” as the club puts plans in place to bounce back immediately.

Jenkins had left The Hawthorns in 2016 following Guochuan Lai’s takeover, a deal which has transformed the club’s fortunes, but not in the way its fans had hoped or expected.

The latest changes have seen Italian sporting director Giuliano Terraneo step into the role of a technical consultant to help in the transition during Albion’s plans for a rebuild over the forthcoming close-season.

The former Fenerbahce director will take up the duties until September when the club hopes to confirm a permanent appointment.

Jenkins said: “I want to assure our supporters that we’re leaving no stone unturned in our efforts to ensure we recover from this very disappointing campaign.

“We need to change the culture and the direction of the club and we need to do it in a way which is sustainable for the long term.

“From my discussions with the owners already, I know there is a genuine desire to build a team with greater goal power and attacking threat which can capture the fans’ imagination.”
