City’s railway station rated Britain’s best outside London

Birmingham New Street has been ranked the best railway station outside London in a large survey by Transport Focus.

The independent watchdog surveyed more than 28,000 people at 56 stations to gauge passengers’ opinions.

Birmingham New Street received a 92% satisfaction rating, putting it behind linked London stations King’s Cross and St Pancras.

Grand Central opened in September 2015, transforming the arrival and departure of railway passengers into the city’s main station.

New Street is Britain’s busiest station outside of London, with around 42m journeys starting or ending there – 10m more than Glasgow Central, the next busiest station outside of the capital city.

Glasgow Queen Street, which is being refurbished, and Gatwick Airport were rated as the most unpopular stations in Britain, followed by Oxford, Clapham Junction and Barking.
