Airline makes ‘temporary’ cut to American flights before take-off

Primera Air has made its third cut to its transatlantic flights from Birmingham, despite the routes not having yet launched.

Yesterday the Icelandic-owned airline cancelled the launch of its Stansted-Toronto route on May 31 because it does not have enough aircraft, blaming a delay in delivery from the manufacturer.

However Birmingham Airport remains confident its services will launch on schedule in the weeks ahead.

The Birmingham-New York route becomes operational tomorrow and will begin with three flights a week – a reduction described by Birmingham Airport as “temporary”.

The low cost airline wanted to fill the slots vacated by United Airlines and last July announced it would fly daily to New York from Birmingham and four times a week to Boston. But in January it dropped the Birmingham-Boston route and reduced its schedule to New York to four times a week, which has now become three.

However Primera Air has this week begun its short haul flights from Birmingham, as the first passengers flew out to Malaga and Palma on Monday.

It has big plans for its Birmingham routes. Next month Primera will begin flying to Toronto three times a week, while Las Palmas, Alicante, Barcelona, Crete and Reykjavik are also scheduled to start in the coming months.
