Plans to double size of hospital scheme at former BBC studios put forward

An application to almost double a hospital scheme at the former BBC Pebble Mill site in Birmingham are expected to be approved by planning bosses tomorrow.

Birmingham City Council had already approved plans from Pebble Mill Investments, a subsidiary of Calthorpe Estates, for a 54,000 sq ft building but will now decide whether the scheme can be increased to 97,000 sq ft.

Calthorpe Estates submitted the revised plans, which have been recommended for approval, enhancing the initial designs to create more floors and deliver more space.

Ralph Minott, director of development for Calthorpe Estates said: “We cannot overlook the importance of Birmingham City Council’s planning team, not only sharing our vision for Pebble Mill Birmingham when we redefined the Medical and Life Sciences Park vision 10 years ago, from the original 2003 Science Park ambition, but the benefit of having the consistency of understanding for the technical and operational parts of the park.

“The strong interest we have received from potential occupiers is for purpose built open plan space for medical facilities, and this has driven the need for extra open plan floor plates of 1324 sq m (14,250 sq ft) to create more space in Building 4. As a result of the recommended decision, we’re excited at the very real possibility of securing more world-leading specialists and pioneering medical treatments in Edgbaston, Birmingham.”

Pebble Mill is already home to the Birmingham Dental Hospital & School of Dentistry and a 62-bedroom Bupa care home, which sit alongside a tranquillity garden, these will joined in Spring 2019 by a new Circle Health private hospital.
