Business people appointed Deputy Lieutenants

The former chief executive of Advantage West Midlands is one of five people appointed Deputy Lieutenants by the West Midlands Lieutenancy as part of Her Majesty’s representation in the region.

The Lord-Lieutenant of the West Midlands, John Crabtree, has increased the number of Deputy Lieutenants to 59, covering the 3m people living in Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton.

Former head of the the regional development agency Mick Laverty, who is now chief executive of ExtraCare Charitable Trust, is joined by the founder of WPR Agency, Julia Willoughby, and PET-Xi Training managing director Fleur Sexton.

Also appointed are Martin Levermore, a visiting professor at Birmingham City University and chair of the trade and business group for Birmingham Commonwealth Association, and Dr Abdullah Shehu, co-founder of Coventry Muslim Forum.

Crabtree said: “The West Midlands Lieutenancy is the second largest Lieutenancy in England and Wales and I am proud of our reputation for bringing communities together. As we approach the Commonwealth Games in 2022, we have an opportunity to promote the fantastic achievements and efforts being made in the region.

“The new Deputy Lieutenants will be part of a strong team that is helping at the grass roots of our community to unearth the outstanding individuals, companies and volunteers that deserve recognition.”

The Lieutenancy is involved in a variety of community roles and activities across the region. It arranges and supports visits to the West Midlands by members of the Royal Family, advises on nominations and honours, and helps identify companies that might be considered as recipients of The Queen’s Award for Enterprise.
