A vehicle safety solution drives revenue at Spillards

A recent adaptation of Spillard Safety Systems’ technology to tackle the problem of blind spots in commercial vehicles has put the business on course for a record £5m year.

DHL, Marston’s and Tesco’s One Stop stores have all entered into significant contracts with Spillard to have its vehicle video surveillance four camera system fitted to over 1500 vehicles, in an effort to improve driver performance and reduce accidents.

Pete Spillard, managing director of Spillard Safety Systems said: “Mining construction and plant have typically been our core markets and, whilst we are still seeing market share grow in these sectors, it is the sudden spike in orders for commercial vehicles that is putting us on target for £5m.

“Major retailers with big fleets and distribution companies are switching on to the dangers of ‘blind spots’, not to mention the additional benefits that come from giving their drivers improved all round awareness using our four camera system.”

“As well as reducing accidents and improving safety, our technology is increasingly being used to prove liability in the case of accidents, a previously expensive issue for companies who often had no way of proving what actually happened.”

The business was founded in 1992 and has been built on supplying safety equipment to the construction, mining and quarrying industries.

This new tranche of orders has created 15 jobs in the last 18 months. In the expectation that this innovation and others will stimulate further demand, the company is investing in its future workforce by funding four apprenticeships, with more to follow if the pipeline of work continues to grow.

Finance director Craig Spillard added: “An increasing number of organisations are adopting our technology and we will continue to work with local authorities and other safety providers to remain the authoritative force in mobile safety solutions.”
