Funding bid for Stratford-upon-Avon’s top tourist attraction

Improvements to the area around Stratford-upon-Avon’s top tourist attraction could be given a boost if a funding bid is successful.

Stratford Council and Shakespeare’s Birthplace Trust are looking to secure funding from the Coventry & Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP) which is looking to invest £6m on tourism projects ahead of Coventry City of Culture 2021 and Birmingham staging the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The joint bid would pay for investments and improvements in facilities in Henley Street, home to Shakespeare’s birthplace.

It is understood that the total cost of the work in the town centre would be about £1.2m and around £500,000 of this would be covered by the CWLEP funds, if the bid is successful.

A spokesperson for The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust said: “The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and Stratford-on-Avon District Council are delighted to be working in partnership on a joint plan to upgrade the streetscape and amenities in Henley Street.  We aim to create a safe, welcoming and social space that enhances the identity and special setting of Shakespeare’s Birthplace and boosts the town’s cultural and tourism offer.

“These plans are subject to funding and it would be premature to comment further pending the outcome of our funding bid to the Coventry & Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership.”
