Birmingham Wholesale Market awards £2.5m waste contract

Birmingham Wholesale Market, the largest integrated market of its kind in the UK, has appointed Biffa’s latest acquisition, Weir Waste, to manage waste across its new £50m site.

Weir Waste, which was acquired by Biffa in a £16.2m deal in August 2018, was appointed by the market to support waste management at its new 360,400 sq ft site in The Hub industrial park.

The contract is worth £2.5m over five years and was awarded following a competitive tender process.

The contract will see Biffa work with the 55 vendors on site to manage and monitor waste, using chipped bins to deliver an individual pay-by-weight solution which encourages users to recycle as much as possible.

Alex Kendrick, key account manager at Biffa, said: “Our commitment to education was a key factor in our appointment and we’ve already delivered 25 hours of well-received training to highlight the commercial and environmental benefits of recycling. With Biffa’s support, we’ll be able to increase this even further and ensure Birmingham Wholesale Market is at the forefront of innovative waste management.”

Francis Armstrong, regional general manager – Midlands at Biffa, said: “This account win is testament to the strength and innovation that Weir offer, making it a perfect fit for the Biffa brand. The team has done a fantastic job in setting up processes on such a complex site and we look forward to moving forward as a fully integrated Biffa account.”
