Plans for £40m four-star city centre hotel to go under spotlight

Plans for the construction of a £40m four star hotel in Birmingham city centre are to be considered by planning bosses today.

The application for the development on land on Suffolk Street adjacent to the Mailbox shopping centre complex and close to the Bullring shopping centre and New Street train station, has been submitted by Turley on behalf of ES Suffolk Birmingham.

To be operated by Dalata Hotels under its Maldron Hotel brand, the development will have around 330 air-conditioned bedrooms, a bar, restaurant and meeting room facilities and comprise three blocks ranging from four to 12-storeys.

The planning application states that the scheme would create around 110 jobs and 130 construction jobs, while delivering hotel accommodation prior to the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The plans represent an investment of £40m into Birmingham City Centre acting as a catalyst for wider investment, the application said.

The site is partially occupied by a former print works building on Suffolk Street, most recently used as a cultural centre. A separate prior notification application for demolition of this building has been submitted as part of the wider proposals.

If the plans are approved, it is thought the hotel could open in early 2021.

Dalata is the Republic of Ireland’s leading hotel company where it operates 12 Clayton and 12 Maldron hotels.
