Birmingham Museum closure delayed until after Commonwealth Games

The closure of Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery has been postponed until after the the city hosts the Commonwealth Games in 2022.

Earlier this year, plans for a new cultural centre in Birmingham were revealed after land in Yardley was approved for regeneration by Birmingham City Council.

The site of the former Pool Way Shopping Centre on Meadway has been earmarked for development in a scheme led by Birmingham Museums Trust.

It is the first phase of a wider plan, which includes redeveloping Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (BMAG) as a new museum for the city, in line with major modernisation works to the Council House complex.

The initial phase will create a new storage facility to house the collections currently held at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, ahead of the redevelopment of the city’s museum.

It has now been announced that the three-year closure of the museum is to be rescheduled.

A statement from Birmingham Museums Trust said: “Birmingham City Council are proposing to reschedule their modernisation works on the Council House complex until after the Commonwealth Games in 2022. This will mean that Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery will no longer be closing in late 2019.

“This does not change our ambitions to redevelop the museum. We will continue to plan the new displays and public facilities so that work can begin onsite sometime after 2022.

“Thank you to everyone who visits and supports the museum. We will keep you updated on our exciting plans.”
