Fleet expansion for civil engineering firm

The Rothen Group, the Warwickshire-based civil engineering and maintenance business which services UK Waterways, has expanded its fleet to meet increasing demand throughout 2018.

The company attributed the strong growth to retaining a number of ongoing maintenance projects, in addition to securing new dredging, reed cutting, and piling jobs.

As a result, the fleet has increased from 15 at the start of 2017, to more than 70 to date. Notable investments include the addition of two more 70ft narrow-beam crane boats, as well as three new reed cutting boats and five hoppers.

In parallel with the growing fleet and business, the team has also expanded from 11 to 18, with the appointment of a mobilisation supervisor, a second mechanic, two general site operators and three excavator operators.

Ian Rothen, founder of The Rothen Group, said: “So far in 2018, we have completed 1000m of piling, cleared over 60km of reeds and weeds from canals and dredged over 5,000m3 of inland water. Some of these have been large contracts, which with the fleet increase has enabled us to expand our ability to undertake these larger scale works.

“Looking ahead, the late winter months are a very busy time for us. We are therefore heading into the season prepared with a fleet and team larger than before, as we continue to restore major waterways on a national scale, as well as undertaking smaller works, including privately commissioned jobs.”
