Vélo Birmingham & Midlands route announced

Full details of the Vélo Birmingham & Midlands 100-mile closed-road route have been released.

One of Europe’s biggest cycling events, Vélo Birmingham & Midlands, formerly Vélo Birmingham,, is returning on Sunday May 12, 2019, with a route which will take 17,000 riders throughout the West Midlands.

Starting and finishing in Birmingham city centre, the new route will also pass through the heart of the 2019 European City of Sport & 2021 Capital of Culture – Coventry – where riders will cycle on the cobbled roads of Pepper Lane and in the shadow of St Michael’s Tower at the Ruins of Coventry Cathedral.

In between these two city centre adventures, riders will travel through Warwickshire towns and villages such as Coleshill, Hurley and Fillongley, along with Solihull villages Meriden, Bentley Heath, Balsall Common and Knowle, among others.

The National Trust estate of Packwood House is another route highlight, while in Birmingham the Georgian streets of Edgbaston, historic Kings Norton Green and Bartley Green Reservoir also feature on the route.

The route has been agreed in partnership with Birmingham City Council, Coventry City Council, Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council, Warwickshire County Council, Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council and Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council as well as emergency services and transport operators to minimise the impact of the necessary road closures.

General entries sold out within a week of opening, but organisers have confirmed that an additional allocation of entries will go on general sale in the new year to those on the waiting list.

Alternatively, riders can secure their place on the start line today via one of Vélo Birmingham & Midlands’ official charities – Queen Elizabeth Hospital Charity Birmingham, NSPCC, Cure Leukaemia and Alzheimer’s Society.

In 2017, Vélo Birmingham raised more than £2m for a number of charities.

In addition to the charity entries, prospective participants can also secure their place on the start line via the Business 100 entry option and be in with a chance of riding alongside World Cup winning former England Rugby captain Martin Johnson.

The Vélo Birmingham Business 100 provides the business community with a unique VIP participation experience alongside extensive networking opportunities.

Andy Street, Mayor of the West Midlands Combined Authority, said: “Vélo Birmingham and Midlands is a hugely important annual event in the lead up to the 2022 Commonwealth Games and I am delighted that the route is set to showcase the very best of the region. It’s fantastic that there has been such huge demand for entries from riders from right across the UK and further afield as this will create an extremely positive economic impact for the region. As 17,000 riders of all abilities cycle through the stunning West Midlands on closed roads, I have no doubt that our communities will embrace this event and treat the riders to a warm Midlands welcome.”
