Council asks for views on budget proposals as it looks to save £2.4m

An online consultation has started over Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council’s financial plans for the year ahead as part of a strategy to save more than £2.4m.

People have until Friday, 11 January to make their views known on the proposals.

A previous six-week consultation, which ended on 30 November, attracted more than 100 responses.

The council said it has now used the results to narrow down the options for savings.

These include:-
£500,000 from a variety of schemes to generate income.
£410,000 from staffing-related efficiencies although this does not include compulsory redundancies.
£442,000 from “good housekeeping” and other efficiencies.
Just over £1m from a 2.99% council tax increase, flexible use of capital receipts and other finance.

Cllr. Stephen Sweeney, deputy leader of the council and cabinet member for finance and efficiency, said: “I am very aware of the fact that the decisions we make have an impact on our council taxpayers. That’s why I am giving people these opportunities to have their say and have an input into the decisions which will be made.

“I hope we can involve as many of our residents as possible in this follow-up consultation which has gone online together with a full breakdown of the detailed savings which are being considered.”
