£1m plan to tackle toxic platform pollution at city station

Birmingham New Street Station is to spend £1m on 97 sensors to monitor toxic fumes from the trains.

It follows a University of Birmingham study earlier this year which found Nitrogen Oxides exceeded the recommended 15-minute exposure limit on 26 out of 68 days.

Network Rail said platform supervisors would also be asked to have “polite conversations” with train drivers who left their engines running for too long.

The 98 fans at the station will also be adjusted, to make them more reactive to harmful gases.

It is thought the project will be completed in April.
