Birmingham’s roads named among UK’s most congested

Traffic congestion

Four of the UK’s top 15 most congested roads are in Birmingham, new research has revealed.

Delays on the A34 Stratford Road from Highfield Road and Highgate Middleway total 44 hours a year, while the return journey suffers from 42 hours of delay.

Dudley Port into Dudley and Soho Hill to the M5 also make the top 15 with annual delays of at least 30 hours.

The data has been compiled by traffic data company Inrix, which has analysed traffic movements in more than 200 cities across 38 countries.

It has estimated the cost of congestion to Birmingham drivers to be £994 a year, with 134 hours lost on average to congestion.

Trevor Reed, transportation analyst at Inrix, said: “Congestion costs Brits billions of pounds each year. Unaddressed, it will continue to have serious consequences for national and local economies, businesses and citizens in the years to come.”

The top three worst-affected roads in the UK were in London, with part of the North Circular Road the most congested, creating annual delays of 61 hours for drivers.
