New engine from Jaguar Land Rover to be built in Wolverhampton

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced it will build a new engine at its manufacturing plant in Wolverhampton.

The new six-cylinder petrol engine will be designed and engineered in-house and manufactured at its £1bn Engine Manufacturing Centre.

JLR said the engine, which will debut on the Range Rover Sport, is more responsive and better balanced than the V6 petrol engine it replaces.

The news comes just a week after JLR posted a £3.4bn pre-tax loss for the last three months of 2018, while sales for the quarter were 144,602 vehicles, compared with 154,447 a year ago.

Nick Rogers, executive director of product engineering, said: “From the outset we always intended Ingenium to be a full family. That is why we chose to engineer our own flexible engine architecture to meet our bespoke needs, allowing Jaguar Land Rover to adapt and stay ahead of changes in regulation and technology.

“This second wave of engines, with a Mild Hybrid 48V system and performance-boosting technologies, is engineered to be cleaner and more efficient than ever before.”
