Peaky Blinders creator wants to ‘join the dots’ with new film studio

Plans for a Birmingham film studio are progressing, according to the creator of Peaky Blinders.

Steven Knight has been the driving force behind a scheme to create a studio with six sound stages in the region that would take advantage of the attractiveness of the UK to international television and film companies.

He has been working on the idea, called Mercian, for three years

Knight told a packed Midlands Pavilion at MIPIM: “If you have internationally-recognised creative centre in Birmingham, the people are going to know where programmes and films are made.

“Birmingham has always made things, it’s made cars – but now it’s going to make television. There’s industry quite like it for profile. The Midlands already has huge creative industry, and now we can join the dots.

“We need to take hold of our cultures and put them together to form an identity.”

We have opportunities throughout the Midlands. It’s time to take advantage. Nobody is going to do it for us.”
