Regeneration consultants appointed to deliver town centre masterplan

Property regeneration consultant AspinallVerdi has been appointed by Tamworth Borough Council to lead a team to deliver a masterplan for the Gungate Site in Tamworth town centre.

The site has been a key regeneration priority for the council for a number of years but delivery stalled following the last recession.

The council said the site provides an opportunity to encourage greater use of the town centre, as well as bring new investment into the local economy.

Most of the site is currently in use as a surface car park. In 2018, the Council bought a large area of the site from the former development partner with the view to taking control of the land to help unlock development.

Staffordshire County Council also own land to the north of Spinning School Lane, and are working with the team as partners to ensure regeneration.

The wider team includes masterplanners Broadway Malyan, cost consultants Gardiner and Theobald and CampbellReith, who will be responsible for transport and engineering.

AspinallVerdi will provide property market input including occupier demand analysis, viability analysis, delivery, implementation and marketing strategy, as well as overall project management.

Parm Dosanjh, executive director of AspinallVerdi, said: “‘This masterplan will build on the existing strengths of Tamworth and the proactive approach the council has taken to assembling the land. Town centres have changed and it is important to ensure that the emerging masterplan is commercially robust and brings a wider offering to the heart of Tamworth. This will help to ensure the future prosperity of the centre.”

Chief executive of Tamworth Borough Council, Andrew Barratt, added: “This is an important site and will be a key part of our ongoing plans for the future regeneration of Tamworth town centre. We’re looking forward to seeing what the masterplanners come up with and ultimately to creating a blend of opportunities on that site to stimulate growth within our town centre.”
