Landmark residential tower at heart of Eastside Locks scheme

St Joseph's Eastside Locks scheme

St Joseph has brought forward its highly-anticipated Eastside Locks scheme, which includes plans for one of the tallest buildings in the Midlands.

The development has 769 apartments across three plots, rising as high as 37 storeys.

The 123-metre tower would be higher than the second Bank tower that has been topped out on Broad Street but below the 42-storey development planned for 212 Broad Street that is also designed by Glenn Howells Architects and Court Collaboration’s 46-storey One Eastside development.

The Eastside Locks scheme would also see a 16-storey building developed with the remainder eight storeys high.

The plans are for 388 one-bed, 373 two-bed and eight three-bed apartments. There is also some commercial space, a cinema and gym included in the plans that have been submitted to Birmingham City Council for approval after 18 months of consultations.

St Joseph, which is part of FTSE 100 developer Berkeley Group, said: “The vision is to create an inclusive community that will reconnect the rich heritage of Eastside Locks with this dynamic and innovative quarter of Birmingham.

“An emphasis on delivering high quality homes and spaces to meet community needs, a concern for environmental impact and a vision to reconnect has resulted in a welcoming place to visit, live and enjoy.”

The 1.28-hectare site is split into three plots by the Digbeth Branch Canal. It is located in the city’s Eastside district and within the Masterplan area for the planned HS2 station at Curzon Street.

The site is surrounded by other development sites, with Unite the Union’s conference centre under construction and work planned at 8 Cardigan Street, Belmont Works and the STEAMHouse.

St Joseph is currently on site at Snow Hill Wharf, a 400-apartment scheme in Birmingham’s Gun Quarter.
