Coventry City in talks over groundsharing

Coventry City has revealed it is in groundsharing talks with other clubs as they look to avoid expulsion from the EFL.

The EFL will hold an emergency general meeting on April 25 to discuss the club’s future after they failed to finalise a deal to keep playing home games at Ricoh Arena next season.

The EFL has asked the club to provide a full update to its board on April 11 regarding the stadium situation for next season.

In a statement, the club said: “Agreeing a deal at the Ricoh Arena for next season remains our main priority and intention, and we hope that all parties can come to agreement for the good of the club, city and most importantly supporters.

“However we are in talks with other clubs about groundsharing next season, to enable the club to fulfil fixtures if necessary. This is not the situation we would want, nor that our fans would want, but would enable the survival of the club in the EFL next season and make sure our fans have a team to support.”

City’s owners Sisu are locked in a legal battle based on their claim that Coventry City Council undervalued the Ricoh Arena by £27m when the ground was sold to Wasps.

Earlier this month, Sisu promised it will drop legal action against the council if it has support to build a home in the city.

However, the leader of Coventry City Council responded by saying Sisu must drop its legal action against the authority or sell the club.

Cllr George Duggins urged Sisu to end the “divisive” dispute over the sale of Ricoh Arena.

Coventry City’s tenancy at the Ricoh Arena runs out this summer, and Premiership rugby union club Wasps has consistently said it will not extend Coventry City’s tenancy if legal action is ongoing.

The Sky Blues are now facing expulsion from League One if they don’t have anywhere to play their home games next season.
