170 jobs at risk as steel business appoints administrators

170 jobs are at risk at a Black Country steel stockholder after it appointed administrators.

No job cuts have yet been made at Meridian Metal Trading, with administrators continuing to trade the Dudley-based business while it seeks a buyer.

Allan Graham and Matthew Ingram from Duff & Phelps were appointed joint administrators yesterday.

The business is headquartered in Dudley and has service centres in Guildford and Sheffield, and sales offices in Bolton and Newport, South Wales.

Graham said it remained “business as usual” while they look to agree a sale.

He said: “Meridian is one of the largest, fully independent steel stockholders and processors in the UK and one of the best known stockholders in the sector. The Company processes steel sheet and coil, and supplies close to 250,000 tonnes of steel to hundreds of customers annually.

“It is our intention to continue to trade the business until a buyer is found, a process that we do not think will take long as there are already a number of expressions of interest.”

Established in 1987 Meridian Metal Trading is headquartered in Dudley in the West Midlands, and today employs circa 170 people across five locations in the UK comprising service centres in Guildford and Sheffield, and sales offices in Bolton and Newport, South Wales.
