Green light for demolition of gas holders

National Grid has secured approval to dismantle three redundant gas holders at Windsor Street in Birmingham.

National Grid is carrying out work at these gas holders as they are now empty and no longer used as part of the gas system network.

The firm said that, in their current state, the gas holder frames represent a “significant safety risk” and need to be dismantled.

The dismantling project will start towards the end of 2019.

Hannah White, National Grid land regeneration manager, said: “The gas holders at Windsor Street have not been used for a long time and their removal will help unlock the site so it can be brought back into beneficial use.

“National Grid works hard to minimise disruption to communities it’s working in and Windsor Street is no exception. We’ll work as quickly and efficiently as possible while we’re on site and we’ll keep the local community informed as our work progresses.”
