174-bed student accommodation in the works for Aston

An application for a student housing scheme in Aston has been submitted.

The proposals outline a 174-bed development which will be spread out between two buildings – one four storey and the other six. When completed the accommodation will consist of 122 “cluster” rooms of 3 and 7-bed apartments, and 52 studio apartments.

The plans proposed by the team for the 25,000 sq ft site also include communal spaces, including a gym, cinema and laundry space.

The site, at 315 Summer Lane in Aston, Birmingham, currently consists of industrial units, which will be demolished to make way for the accommodation.

The units are currently used by a small engineering business and as meeting spaces, and are described as being in a “poor state of repair.”

D5 Architects have been appointed by contractors CG Reynolds to work on the plans for the site. Also involved in the project are Town Planning & Design Services, Briar Associates and civil engineers Cundall.

The application for the Gun Quarter said the redevelopment intends to meet increasing demand for student accommodation in the city.
