Council appoints agents to shopping centre

Avison Young has been appointed to manage Walsall’s retail anchor the Saddlers Shopping Centre.

The centre has over 193,000 sq ft of indoor retail over two floors and incorporates Walsall Railway Station, which has received a major boost with the opening of the newly electrified, Walsall to Rugeley line, providing faster and more frequent services to London.

Avison Young will provide property management, retail strategy, lettings and destination marketing services to the centre, following the company’s appointment by Walsall Council.

The Saddlers Shopping Centre is the latest addition to the more than 2 million sq ft of retail property currently under management by Avison Young.

Guy Thompson, Avison Young, said: “This is an exceedingly important hub for the people of Walsall and we want to ensure that the Saddlers Centre remains a key component of the retail and leisure mix in the town.

“Our combined property management, retail and destination marketing teams will be working hard to achieve the best mix of tenants, events and facilities to ensure we have the right offer for the local community.”

Alongside providing property management services, Avison Young will also act as joint retail letting agents.

Richard Jones, from Avison Young’s retail team, said: “The Saddlers Centre is well positioned to react positively to the structural changes and challenging market conditions that we’re seeing within the retail sector both regionally and nationally.

“This is the prime shopping centre in the town and is trading well, with strong consistent footfall. We will work alongside the Centre owners to provide strategic advice to evolve its range of uses, whilst responding to emerging market trends in the retail and leisure sector.”

Deputy Leader of Walsall Council, Cllr Adrian Andrew said: “I’m pleased that we have been able to appoint Avison Young to manage this key asset. The Saddlers Centre is an important gateway and will play a key role as we develop the Town Centre Masterplan over the coming years.”

Occupiers at the Saddlers Centre include, Heron Foods, Costa Coffee Greggs, Carphone Warehouse and Clarks.
