Weekender: Colmore Food Festival to tickle the tastebuds

Colmore Food Festival 2019 kicks off over the weekend in Victoria Square with mouthwatering food and drink being served by some of Birmingham’s top restaurants and bars.

Organised by Colmore BID, the free event, now in its ninth year, includes 36 stands as well as music acts and attracts more than 30,000 each year.

All food has been capped at £4 and drinks at £5: “ensuring visitors can enjoy a bite to eat or drink without breaking the bank”.

Michelin-starred chef’s Glynn Parnell and Adam Stokes will be represented by their restaurants Purnell’s Bistro and Adam’s. They will be joined by Bar OPUS and OPUS Restaurant, Java Lounge Coffee House and Loki Wine.

Purnell’s Bistro will be serving beef, coriander and lime chalupas and Mr Purnell’s Parma Violet ice-cream with raspberry and white chocolate while Adam’s will be dishing out Westlands Heritage Tomato, Smoked Goats Cheese and Basil Tart and Frozen Strawberry and Clotted Cream Sandwich.

There will also be stands from city-centre newcomers Pint Shop, Hookway’s and Dirty Martini and long-established favourites Chung Ying Central, Primitivo and Zen Metro.

“Colmore Food Festival has established itself as one of the Midlands’ great weekends of fantastic food and drink to suit all tastes and budgets, all organised for Birmingham by the team at Colmore BID,” said Alex Tross of Colmore Business District.

Colmore BID recently secured its third five-year term representing the Business District and said it plans to continuously improve the Festival in recognition of the growth of hospitality and the evening economy within the District.

The is continuing its mission to achieve zero waste to landfill and a total ban on plastic drinking straws and all food waste will be taken to a special plant where it can be recycled into renewable energy and nutrient-rich fertiliser.

Recycling experts First Mile who will offer advice on business sustainability and recycling stations will be dotted around the square and all coffee grounds will be recycled into pellets to use in wood-burners and stoves.

“It is also great to continue our partnership with First Mile to help minimise the environmental impact of the event. It is encouraging to know our businesses will be creating energy, saving trees and playing their part in creating a sustainable, enjoyable weekend of great food and drink,” said Tross.
