Stourbridge MP resigns following Brexit vote in Parliament

Margot James

Conservative MP Margot James has resigned after she voted for an amendment to block the next prime minister from suspending parliament and forcing through a no-deal Brexit.

She quit her post as Minister of State for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport a role she held from January 2018.

She was one of 17 Conservative “rebels” who voted for the amendment, which saw a majority of 41 in favour of blocking potential future Prime Minister Boris Johnson from suspending Parliament to carry out a no-deal Brexit Vote.

Johnson, the frontrunner in the Tory leadership contest, has said the country must leave the EU by the October 31 deadline with or without a deal.

But any plans he might have to prorogue Parliament were dealt a blow as MPs voted for the amendment by 315-274.

Dudley, of which Stourbridge is in the Metropolitan Borough of, voted 67.6% to leave the EU in the 2016 referendum.
