ERDF pledges £17m to boost region’s business and tourism

A FRESH injection of public funding aimed at boosting tourism and business in Birmingham, Solihull and the Black Country has been announced.

The European Regional Development Fund has pledged £17m over three years to the region via an inward investment and visitor marketing campaign aimed at raising the area’s profile as a place to do business, invest, visit and host major events.

The news comes as Marketing Birmingham announced yesterday it had signed a memorandum of understanding with UK Trade and Investment to be the main point of contact for inward investment on behalf of the Greater Birmingham and Solihull area.

The ERDF said its £17m funding would initially create 500 new jobs with the potential to generate an additional 4,500 in the wider area.

It claims the money will also help to attract an anticipated 50 new businesses to the region and help 500 others improve their performance.

The ‘Investing in the City Region’ project has been awarded over £8.8m from the ERDF which is managed by the Department for Communities and Local Government, with Marketing Birmingham and its partners providing the match funding to create the £17m total for the campaign’s activities.

Activity will also support the area’s economic growth by providing support services to local businesses.

Regional partners in the campaign include Birmingham City Council, Birmingham Airport, Centro, Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council and the Black Country Authorities.
