Free drinks as Urban celebrates third birthday

COLMORE Business District-based Urban Coffee Company is celebrating its third birthday today with free coffee and cupcakes.

The independent coffee company, founded by entrepreneurs Simon Jenner and Amir Belkhelladi, opened the doors to its venue on Church Street in August 2009.

It has become a favourite meeting place for the Birmingham business community and has expanded to three locations within the city centre, with its most recent venture being a coffee ‘pod’ located in The Mailbox.

To mark the occasion the firm is hosting a day-long celebration today at Church Street, where staff will be giving away 300 cups of coffee and cupcakes.

Customers are also invited to the official birthday party, kicking off at 7.30pm in the store.

Hannah Wolsey, managing director of Urban Coffee Company, said: “We have sold over 100,000 cups of coffee in our flagship Church Street emporium alone in the past year and have achieved a group turnover of £500,000.

“It really shows that independents like us can take on the high street chains and flourish. Our customers are incredibly loyal, which is undoubtedly why we have prospered.

“We also try and give back to the local community, hosting our Live Music Friday gigs and offering exhibition space in our Jewellery Quarter emporium to local artists and students from Birmingham School of Jewellery.

“We also think carefully about how we source our produce, buying nearly 3,000 cupcakes through social enterprise Frost & Snow, making sure all our coffee is fairly traded and purchasing much of our foodstuffs from Birmingham’s markets.

“We’re looking forward to throwing a great bash on Friday, with an open invite to anyone who wants to celebrate with us. Drop along for a free coffee whilst they last, or join us after work to raise a glass when the party really starts!”
