RSM Tenon and Yorkshire Bank are set to co-host a free ‘Doing Business with Australia’ breakfast seminar to help businesses in the West Midlands embrace the distant but prosperous Australian market.

The seminar, which is part of RSM Tenon’s ‘Doing Business With…’ series, will take place on Thursday 8 November at The Hawthorns, West Bromwich Albion Football Club from 7:30am to 10:30am.

It will provide business owners and decision makers with an introductory look at the practicalities, opportunities and challenges of doing business with Australia.

Alongside RSM Tenon and Yorkshire Bank, Vanessa Trueman of Jumar Solutions Ltd, based in Solihull, will be sharing her ‘warts and all’ experience of setting up an Australian subsidiary from scratch. Neil Hough from RSM Bird Cameron – RSM International’s Australian member firm – will also give an overview of the current landscape in Australia as well as highlighting recent changes. Phill Potter from UK Export Finance will be advising on government support for exporters.

Prime Minister David Cameron said this week that there was a need for a rebalancing of the economy and a need to “make more and sell more” overseas.

International partner at RSM Tenon, Phil Coleman, wholeheartedly agrees. He said: “What we need to do is help SMEs get involved in exporting and world trade to help boost the economy in a lasting and sustainable way. There are real growth opportunities overseas and more opportunities for UK businesses to boost sales – which is why we are holding a series of seminars looking into supporting companies looking to trade internationally.”

Simon Hayden, trade partner for Yorkshire Bank, will be speaking at the seminar. He added: “Australia has a strong economy which has not suffered to the same extent as Europe and the rest of the world in terms of economic downturn, making it a good place to do business. As a developed economy with a western outlook, it also has clear synergies with the UK as well as Europe and Northern America.

“Through the free seminar, businesses can learn the best ways to make a deal work in Australia by addressing the risks involved in international trade, choosing the right payment methods and utilising a structured trade solution.

“No two deals are the same and experience shows that, when dealing with high value transactions or new partners operating on the other side of the world, it is important to ensure financial precautions and measures are taken to guarantee the success of such business.

“A key element to success of ‘deep water’ trade is to engage your professional advisers early. This includes the bank, your accountant and the UKTI. You may find the accumulated help and advice invaluable and this can make a real difference between winning or losing a contract through to securing your preferred profit margin whilst mitigating financial risks on the deal.”

After the presentations there will be an opportunity to discuss international business plans on a one-to-one basis.
