Monarch reigns at Birmingham Airport but Scottish services trimmed

LOW cost carrier Monarch Airlines has boosted operations from Birmingham Airport with the introduction of a new service to Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt.

The airline is providing a weekly service each Thursday to the resort during the 2012/13 winter season.

Kevin George, Monarch managing director, said: “We are delighted to be expanding our winter 2012/13 flights programme from Birmingham Airport, providing our customers in the Midlands with even more flexibility and choice.”

The airline, which already operates services to the resort from Gatwick and Manchester, is further building its schedule of services from Birmingham with the start of flights in December to ski destination Grenoble.

Martyn Lloyd, commercial director at Birmingham Airport, said: “This new flight from Monarch means passengers now have even more choice from their local airport. We are delighted with the commitment that Monarch has shown to the region in offering this new route and also the addition of the new route to Grenoble.

“Monarch is going from strength to strength at Birmingham and the services and facilities that it offers means passengers have choice, value and convenience from their local airport.”

The airport has claimed in its submission to Government’s review on aviation that it currently has the spare capacity to ease the load on the over-burdened South-East.
However, while Monarch is extending its services, Scottish airline Loganair is cutting back on its operations.

It is scraping the scheduled service from Dundee Airport to December because the route is no longer viable.

Flights will cease on Sunday December 2. Passengers are being offered alternative flights through Loganair’s franchise partner Flybe, or a full refund.

The Birmingham service has been in operation since May 2008, however, Loganair said a lack of passenger demand meant the route had become unsustainable.
