Birmingham Metropolitan College wins award for entrepreneurship

THE BMET Enterprise Academy at Birmingham Metropolitan College has won the Outstanding Entrepreneurship in Learning and Skills award at the second annual TES FE Awards.

The announcement was made at a gala ceremony hosted by TV presenter and newsreader Fiona Bruce at The Skills Show, LG Arena, Birmingham.

Judges found the depth and range of entrepreneurial activity at the BMET Enterprise Academy “very impressive”, but also admired how the college sought to instil values of social responsibility.

The academy works with more than 100 employers in the region, including Barclays Wealth, EON, Glide Utilities and FleetMilne Residential and has seen 5,000 students learn entrepreneurial skills in three years.

Jane Smith, head of the academy, said: “The BMET Enterprise Academy gives students a real opportunity to move from the classroom into the boardroom and the substantial number snapped up by the companies who work with the academy is testament to this.”

This is Birmingham Metropolitan College’s second TES FE Award, having won the Outstanding Innovation in Teaching, Training and Learning Provision Award in 2011.
