Warwick building firm secures expansion with Burdens acquisition

A WARWICKSHIRE builders merchants has expanded with the acquisition of a rival firm following its lapse into administration.

Warwick-based MPS Builders Merchants’ has taken on the Swindon depot of Burdens in a deal part advised out of the region. The acquisition has saved the jobs of 10 people.

The deal, overseen by the corporate and property departments of Leamington Spa solicitors Wright Hassall, sees the freehold premises, lorries, plant and equipment, stock, assets and staff of Burdens Swindon transferred to MPS. The move adds to a portfolio that includes sites in Birmingham, London, Fareham and Warwick.

Burdens was established in Birmingham in 1929 but entered administration last year in a move which saw 22 of its sites acquired by Warwickshire-based Wolseley UK.

Steve Halkett, of Wright Hassall’s corporate team who advised on the deal, said: “For MPS, the acquisition of the Swindon depot of Burdens complements their operation perfectly. It will help to continue the firm’s steady growth while improving the strength of existing client relationships and providing great standing in a new geographical area.

“The deal had to be completed swiftly and efficiently not least as the jobs of the Swindon depot staff were at stake.”

“This particular deal also demonstrates Wright Hassall’s ability to offer a comprehensive bespoke service. Not only did the corporate department advise on the purchase of the business and its assets but the property department simultaneously took care of the legal work required with regard to the freehold property.”
