APC trials bigger trailers as part of Government scheme

A STAFFORDSHIRE logistics firm has signed up to become the latest freight operator to sign up to the Department for Transport’s scheme to pilot extended trailers on HGVs.

APC Overnight, based in Essington, has purchased four extended-length, double-deck trailers from leading manufacturer, Cartwright. The new vehicles are two metres longer than standard vehicles and feature aerodynamic fronts – a combination which simultaneously increases capacity and reduces wind drag to improve efficiency.

The Government’s 10-year pilot scheme will see 1,800 extended HGV trailers trialled across the UK. The test vehicles will be independently monitored over the course of the program to log carbon emissions and safety records.

Brian McCarthy, head of operations at APC Overnight, said: “We were keen to participate in the trial to find out first hand whether the extended trailers will have a positive impact on the business long term. The increased capacity on board will be of huge benefit to the trunking network – the extra space in the double-deck trailers will increase load capacity by 15%.

“We will also be monitoring our carbon emissions closely as it is hoped that through these new vehicles, we can reduce our footprint along with the number of vehicles we would need to have on the road should the trailers be formally introduced following the trial.”

APC Overnight is also in talks with Cartwright to increase its fleet of standard length moving deck trailers.
